About the Artist
Ailsa Morgan is a classically-trained artist, with post-graduate studies in drawing attained from Central School of Art in London. Ailsa has over four decades of exhibitions, with works acquired by notable private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and Parliament House in Sydney.
After relocating to the Blue Mountains, Ailsa realised a newfound appreciation of the beauty of spring blooms – their colours, shapes and ability to represent and magnify the light and joy of the season.
Her most recent still life drawings are inspired by the gentle grace and promise of this time of year.
artist statement
In a world where time is so precious yet moves so quickly, I relish the opportunity to hold time still and appreciate the beauty of a flower. Some are majestic, some are simple and some extremely complex. All are splendid individually or collectively. They radiate joy and induce a sense of tranquillity and calm in me.
For me, spring provides beauty with its flowering. Bathed in light they sing, a thrill for our senses with all their colour, shapes, textures and intricate structures.
I simply love growing them and then drawing them placed in vases on my oak farmhouse table where the light provides a gentle, golden luminosity. It spills across the table pooling in changing shadows. The drawings are rendered with watercolour pencils. They allow for fine details, combined with soft washes, to create layers and depth. I find them to be a versatile and magical medium.
