01 Dec Martin Campbell
Martin Campbell is a Sydney-based artist. After studying traditional oil painting for many years he now paints in a more contemporary style. His main focus is the industrial landscape of the working harbour, though his most recent exhibition at Lost Bear Gallery was a departure from this subject, instead drawing inspiration from the sky.
In 2012, Martin won the ANL Mission to Seafarers Art Prize. In previous years, he has been selected as a finalist in the Mosman Art Prize and the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Sydney Heritage Fleet shipyard. Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW and an Exhibiting Member with the Australian Society of Marine Artists. He also enjoys the occasional landscape painting trip as a member of the Australian Plein-Air Artists Group.
“Aethereum” is a collection of paintings that explore the differing moods and subtleties of our sky. As a painter inspired by the landscape I have literally turned to the Heavens on more than one occasion for inspiration and it dawned on me to create a series of paintings depicting this. The paintings capture the sky from its most tempestuous incarnations to the most sublime and delicate and everything in between. Regardless of the mood of the sky however they share a sense of the ethereal. The paintings are all square in proportion which allows for compositions not dictated to by orientation. Also, omitting any land mass or horizon in the paintings allows the sky to just be itself.
